Mobile Advertising: Google, AdMob, Apple and More

I was reading an article over at Channel Web talking about Apple announcing their new ad platform. Apple will be holding a press conference on Thursday that is expected to be held to introduce iPhone OS 4.0. In this article, it is predicted that Apple may also take this opportunity to announce the launch of their new iPhone ad platform. Why is this interesting, you might ask?

Ever since Apple acquired Quattro Wireless, it was a predictable next step that Apple would launch their own mobile ad platform. Quattro Wireless is a company that specializes in mobile marketing solutions for advertisers and publishers. Apple acquired Quattro for $275 million earlier this year.

What makes this a bit more interesting to me is the fact that Google’s acquisition of AdMob had been meeting FTC resistance, understandably. Google has rapidly been placing a choke hold on the digital marketing space with their hands in basically all digital advertising opportunities. However, if Apple announces at this press conference that they will be launching their own ad platform, will this alleviate the pressure from the FTC on Google. Google will effectively be pushed out of the iPhone advertising platform (potentially), leaving them to focus their efforts on Android market.

Pretty interesting opportunities here for Apple, but this could potentially open up the opportunity for Google to complete the acquisition of AdMob. However, was the main point of the acquisition to capitalize on the iPhone market? Or does Google feel strongly that the Android market will continue growing?
